Vadian was an accomplished scholar. He studied the classics, wrote poetry, and obtained a doctor of medicine. He was even promoted to Dean at the University of Vienna. In the city of St. Gallen, to which he returned in 1519, he was appointed the city physician and was elected mayor. A friend of Zwingli (a leader of the Reformation in Switzerland), he was the most important proponent of the Reformation in St. Gallen. He donated his private library to the City of Sts. Gallen; his records make references to the visit of Paracelsus.
